Sunday Training and Come & Try

Sunday Training and Come & Try

Club Members had a great morning on Sunday 6 May training on the Hawkesbury River at Macquarie Park.
The training session was run in a different format to usual, with sprints and criterium events as part of the training sessions.
Congratulations to Troy Myers and Stephen Shelley for organising this event.
There were 15 paddlers in attendance 14 kayaks and nobody was disappointed with the session.
The training session was followed by a Come and Try event run by club coach, Lyle Mead, which had seven prospective paddlers attend.
Due to the success of this event, it is expected another event will be run in the near future, followed by another Come and Try event.

MacQuarie Park Clean Up

MacQuarie Park Clean Up

Australia Day clean up by WCC at Macquarie Park was canceled due to being washed out by the Feb/March floods.
Not to be beaten by this set back the Club Secretary decided that was not going to stop us the Park needed a clean and we were going to do it.
So when an email to all Members to come and help clean up Macquarie Park on Saturday the 14th a number of WCC Members turned up to clean our Park.
When we started I thought to myself this was not going to be to hard the Park looked very clean but much to my surprise when you started looking around with a bag in your hand to fill, I was surprised how fast I filled it and I had to go back for another.
After a couple of hours the amount of rubbish piled up as you can see from the photos it was a very satisfying morning.
Unfortunately it was a very disappointing morning seeing what the community leaves behind after a day in the park.
As a matter of fact we were all discussed at what we had to pick up.

End of Twilight Series

End of Twilight Series

The last race of the Twilight series was a cracker with eight paddlers achieving personal best times.
Congratulations to Troy Meyers/Dave Raymond, Geoff Forward, Greg Thompson, Lyle Mead, Liz Pratt, Brian Norman and Kit Nicolle.

With such an enjoyable season it’s hard to see it end. The loss of the weekly camaraderie and competition will be missed we hope you’re all looking forward to the presentation night on the 13th April.

Hopefully we can all come up with alternative ideas to keep us together as a social group with healthy competition during the winter months.

Social Week End

Social Week End

Windsor Canoe Club members had a great weekend camping at Dunn’s Swamp, 2.5 hours north of Richmond on 23-25 March.

The water was well suited to all levels of paddlers.

It was not all social however, as there were training sessions on both Saturday and Sunday mornings with a bit of relaxing time at Lowes Winery, to ease the aching muscles.

As you can see from the photos in the Gallery, there was a considerable amount of time spent around the camp fire.

The vistas through the mist on the Sunday morning were sensational and as can be seen in the photos from the weekend, everyone found the camping pretty tough.

All arrived home safely ready for the Last Twilight Series Race for the 2011/2012 season on Tuesday night 27 March.

Good luck to all Members looking to break their PB’s in preparation for the presentation night to be held in mid-April.

Paddling Again After Flood

Paddling Again After Flood

After a couple of weeks off due to the Feb/March 2012 floods, we are back on the river racing again.
Unfortunately it was not easy with the tide running out at about 3km/h and some very choppy water.
The fast tide was good practice for Wagga Wagga, shame we are not paddling there with the Marathon series this year.
The distance was approximately 1km shorter than the usual 7.6km so there will be no PB’s and no division changes.
A few people missed the bottom turn Buoy this week. It is now against the rules to do this. (unless you can come up with a good excuse!).
Yes, the green turn buoy did float off in the floods and is half way to Bass Strait by now but we won’t be accepting that as a reason!
27 March is our last race, meaning it’s also your last chance to do a PB or beat your favourite enemy.
Under this years rules you were required to paddle 9 times in a division to be eligible for trophies.
Results can be viewed on the Twilight Series Results Tab.

Summer Series A Blast for Windsor Kayaker

Summer Series A Blast for Windsor Kayaker

Phil Whalley competed in the third event of the Blast Paddlers Summer Series held at Botany on Australia Day. Approximately 100 paddlers turned out for the event, battling with rough seas, overcast weather and humidity. Several paddlers fell out of their vessels due to the choppy seas. Phil battled it out with six other sea kayakers to take out 1st place in the 10km event in a time of 1hour and 13 minutes, no mean feat.
